Sights and sounds at The Velvet Note: an enriching music space primed for more
Being in business is one thing, and being in the business of providing live music in an intimate space and place is another.
For 12 years, the Alpharetta, GA based venue The Velvet Note is one of Metro-Atlanta's more highly regarded locations for jazz and live music. Under the leadership of owner Tamara Fuller, providing a heightened and diverse experience ranging from its audiences and artists (local, national, international, and even Grammy nominated and awarded artists) is a hallmark of their space and place.
During our in-depth conversation, we touch base on a number of topics, ranging from business to personal, along with speaking to challenges that come with the territory, to being committed to excellence and building upon its history and tradition.
At the beginning of our conversation, Ms. Fuller shares her backstory regarding her affinity for music. Be it her expertise in playing to related business experience, she embraces the comforting and soothing elements which music can provide; this catapults her to the transformative origins and creation of The Velvet Note (you may learn more by watching the following segment):
Over the course of the past 12 years, a top-notch experience at the 40-plus seating "acoustic living room" (with studio level audio and sounds) features a wide array of artists. From jazz and contemporary heavyweights Robert Glasper and Diane Schuur to talented youth and local rising stars from their Open Mic Jam Sessions (on Thursdays), the venue is a known quantity when it comes to exciting, engaging, and enriching performances. Given the range of talent which comes through the doors, the jazz and live music community's embracing of having memorable live experiences makes this a key location to patronize (you may learn more by watching the following segment):
In light of recent challenges stemming from the onset of the pandemic (2020) to this year, Ms. Fuller is truly committed to working through and beyond them to keep The Velvet Note and related experiences right where they are. Combined with growing support from the immediate and surrounding community, along with adjustments to embrace evolving best practices given the evolving music landscape, she and her team are preparing to rise to the challenge. With their continued lineup and upcoming performances from Grammy Award winning saxophonist Kebbi Williams (on September 8th as part of the venue's celebration of the birthday and musical legacy of John Coltrane) to an upcoming Music in the Movies series, the creativity and innovation synonymous with the venue is going and going strong (you may learn more by watching the following segment):
The Velvet Note is doing more than building upon its previous body of work and evolving in its approaches. It's sticking to the essentials and fundamentals of how and why they got here in the first place; in remaining true to its prevailing principles and making a few constructive changes, they are even more committed to being an engaging and diverse space music and audience-wise in providing memorable experiences that only live music can bring.
When music is comforting, soothing, and enriching, that is The Velvet Note.
