Run it back: the Georgia Spartans' Back2School Drive/Italian Icee Social and a win on the court
Saturday, July 22, 2023.
To some, it's just another day. To those in Metro-Atlanta, not only is it the key day of the weekend (Saturday), but with a number of school systems gearing up for the 2023-24 academic year (in some instances, school starts the business week of July 31st), it's time to get in gear and "run it back" to the building.
However, for some students and their families, it can be a trying time, especially when it comes to having adequate supplies for school which align with the larger teaching and learning process. Thanks to the day's event hosted by the Georgia Spartans, the community enjoys a positive run to get students ready for the school year.
And yes, there's the on-court action by the team, as they continue their winning ways.
Exchange Park (2771 Columbia Drive in Decatur, GA) is the host venue for the day. An eagerly anticipating audience of energetic youth and adults enjoy time with multiple vendors, food, fun, fellowship, and of course, supplies for the start of the school year. All registered attendees receive their backpacks complete with supplies, and even those who did not register are able to receive supplies from the host organization and the vendors in attendance, as the focus is on covering as much ground as possible for those in need.
And as articulated by vendors including (but not limited to) Good Good Ice (click HERE to visit their Instagram) and D-Best BBQ, it's not only about their business, but the larger business of leaving a positive footprint and impact in the community, especially when it comes to young people and education (view their interviews below/accordingly):
As if the purpose and positive energy behind today's drive isn't enough, to put the proverbial icing on the cake, the Georgia Spartans (semi-pro basketball team) make their way to the court for some exciting play against Cooks Academy.
Early on, Cooks Academy gives the Spartans plenty to think about; after the 1st quarter, the Spartans hold a 24-22 advantage and thanks to a buzzer beater to conclude the 2nd quarter/first half, they hold a mere 42-37 edge.
Once the 2nd half commences, the Spartans start getting in sync. With a stellar blend of interior play and perimeter shooting combined with improved defense, they are able to gain separation and build a second half lead of up to 17 points. Despite a late flurry of 3-pointers by Cooks Academy, the Spartans are able to close out the half and game on a high note, resulting in a 104-90 win.
When it's time to run it back, it's clear to run it back with a winning team on the court and community, and that would be the Georgia Spartans.
