Charlotte stops the Stripers 4-2

Pregame: Charlotte Knights (29-50, 14 GB in the AAA International League East) vs Gwinnett Stripers (38-41, 10.5 GB in the AAA International League West)

On a warm Wednesday (July 6, 2022) in Lawrenceville, GA at Coolray Field, the Charlotte Knights and the Gwinnett Stripers are set to resume their extended series (6 games concluding on July 10th). Gwinnett (AAA affiliate of the 2021 World Series Champion Atlanta Braves) is coming off an impressive 6-3 win as their pitching shuts out the Knights (AAA affiliate of the Chicago White Sox) after their 3-run first inning (click HERE for our recap).

The visiting Charlotte Knights are sending Davis Martin (3-2, 3.94 ERA) to the mound (he is on the White Sox 40-man roster) to slow down Gwinnett's offense. With Eloy Jimenez completing his rehab assignment (as he is recalled by Chicago on July 5th), Mark Payton (.282 batting average with 11 home runs and 43 runs batted in), Carlos Perez (.282 BA with 12 HR and 46 RBI's), Adam Hasley (.280 BA with 38 RBI's and 11 stolen bases/member of the White Sox 40-man roster), and Blake Rutherford (.276 BA with 33 RBI's) look to set the tone for the offense/starting lineup.

The Stripers counter with Huascar Ynoa (4-4, 5.13 ERA and a member of of the Atlanta Braves' 40-man roster) to build on the pitching staff's performance from the series opener. Braden Shewmake (.271 BA with 16 RBI's), Drew Waters (.250 BA with 15 RBI's/member of the Atlanta Braves' 40-man roster), Alex Dickerson (.247 BA with 7 HR and 21 RBI's), and Delino DeShields, Jr. (.265 BA with 16 RBI's and 16 SB's) look to lead the starting lineup and build on their offensive performance.

Prior to the game, Gwinnett catcher Chadwick Tromp join us to provide some timely insight. He is building on his individual goals (.257 BA with 9 HR and 33 RBI's) on offense and defense, as well as discussing team chemistry, professionalism, and some tidbits for younger players, coaches, and fans of the game (watch the interview below):

Game highlights: the Charlotte Knights (30-50) defeat the Gwinnett Stripers (38-42) by a 4-2 score

Charlotte would score first in the top of the 4th against Gwinnett starting pitcher Husacar Ynoa. A pair of 2-out RBI's by Micker Adolfo and Zach Remillard would give the Knights a 2-0 lead.

However, just as in the first game of the series, the lead would be short lived.

The Stripers respond in the bottom of the 4th inning. Thanks to a pair of RBI doubles by Alex Dickerson and Ryan Casteel, the score is tied at 2.

There is a rain delay in the top of the 5th inning given lightning and rain in close proximity to the ballpark.

Once play resumes, the Knights would retake the lead. Thanks to Adam Haseley's 2-run home run over the right field fence in the top of the 7th inning off the Stripers' Seth Elledge, they would take a 4-2 lead.

This time, it's Charlotte's pitching staff who keeps Gwinnett's bats at bay, as their bullpen provides 5 innings (5th through 9th inning of shutout relief). Daniel Winkler (3-0) earns the win and Lincoln Henzman notches his first save of the year. Offensively, Adam Haseley (1 for 3 with a home run and 2 RBI's), along with RBI's by Micker Adolfo and Zach Remillard lead the offense.

Gwinnett's Seth Elledge (1-3) takes the loss. Alex Dickerson (2 for 4 with 1 RBI) and Ryan Casteel (1 for 2 with 1 RBI) pace the team's offense (click HERE for the complete box score).

The series resumes on July 7th (7:05pm EST first pitch) at Coolray Field.
