Amplifying the unsung: the 6th annual Unsung Heroes Awards via Congressman Hank Johnson recognizes the impact of those in the 4th District and immediate community
This past Sunday (November 17, 2024), something special takes place in the 4th Congressional District, specifically at Legacy Park (Decatur, GA). While Congressman Hank Johnson is present and accounted for, the day is about a program in place since 2019, and specifically, positive amplification of some truly amazing people who use their time and talents for the greater good.
The Unsung Heroes Awards has honored more than 100 community members. With a synergy and energy to go above and beyond the community call of duty, their level of community outreach and service is more than just commendable.
"They give their time, energy, and talent to make our communities stronger, safer, and more connected. It's an honor to shine a light on their achievements", notes Congressman Johnson.

Ranging from community advocacy related (but not limited to) education, faith-based and civic organizations, mentoring programs (for youth), along with calls to service for veterans and underserved communities, all are highlighted for their individual and collective endeavors to make their communities enhanced spaces and places to live, work, and beyond (in DeKalb, Rockdale, and Newton Counties).
The award categories and recipients are as follows:
Diamond of the District: The recipients include Rev. Dr. Billie Boyd-Cox, Darlene E. Hotchkiss, and Esther Maclin.
Pillar of Power: The recipients include Rev. Dr. Eric Wendel Lee Sr., Nancy Schultz, and Coach Cleveland Stroud.
Community Cornerstone: The recipients include Albert Murray, Thomas Mitcham "Mitch" Stewart, and Stanley Williams.
Beacon of Light: The recipients include Erik Brown, Marketa Killingbeck and Tommy Plummer.
Champion of the 4th: Garrett Crawford, Thomas McCrea, and Phontonia Walter.
When it comes to community, anyone on any day can do something for the greater good. For the 2024 honorees (and those from previous years), their energy and dedication in amplifying their efforts are commendable traits and beyond.
And amplifying them, along with their respective organizations, is what Congressman Johnson (and his team) do in highlighting ways those in the district and beyond are making an effort to make our communities better.
