Access to education: Poplar Hill Missionary Baptist Church's Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr celebration service with keynote speaker Dr. Adrienne Simmons speaking to education and beyond

The Monday after January 15th in recent memory is a key day.

It's the day where the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday is celebrated (as his birthday is January 15, 1929). As part of the day of remembrance of his impact on society across civil rights, economic equity, and the call to not stand idly by, of the multiple events and programs taking place, one such event is taking place at 10am on January 20, 2025 at Poplar Hill Missionary Baptist Church (234 E. Shadburn Ave in Buford, GA).

Over the past few years, the service which takes place at this key community hub, places emphasis on where we are and where do and can we go from here (click HERE of our coverage of last year's event in January 2024). Under the leadership of Rev. Avery Headd and a committed leadership team/board, this year's service provides a balance of celebration and a reminder of the service, stewardship, and advocacy that all have the capacity to do.

This year, Dr. Adrienne Simmons is delivering the keynote message. A member of the Gwinnett County Public Schools Board, her message is centered on the theme of Educationally Speaking, Life!

The event is open to the public; for those who may not be able to attend in person, it will be live-streamed on the church's YouTube and Facebook Live platforms.

Again, this Monday is meaningful given the nature of the holiday. And to add to the meaning, a meaningful message which comes from a space of perspective, engagement, and empowerment is one which all can conceivably draw from.

It's about applying and amplifying education for more than just the classroom, but for the larger community and beyond.
