Preview: Miles College (18-17-1) vs Alabama A&M (8-23) at the 10th Diamond Classic (Birmingham, AL) via BCSG360
The 10th Diamond Classic via Black College Sports Group 360 takes place at Regions Field in Birmingham, AL. The home stadium for the Birmingham Barons (the AA affiliate of the Chicago White Sox) provides a scenic setting for the matchup for some HBCU Baseball (April 8, 2025 at 6pm CST).
Both teams are not only looking for a win this evening and building momentum for the rest of the season and their postseason aspirations. During pre-game, both Milton Barney, Jr (the head coach of Miles College) and Louis "Coach Whit" Whitlow (the head coach of Alabama A&M) take time to speak with us on not only the ground they are covering with their respective teams, but the larger importance and relevance of HBCU's on the diamond and the larger community.
Game highlights: Alabama A&M's 4-run 2nd inning creates enough separation en route to an 8-6 win
Alabama A&M's offense puts tremendous pressure on Miles College, as they sprint out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the 1st. Dre Amaral's RBI single and Kylan Duncan's sacrifice fly provide the offense.
Miles College would tie the game at 2 in the top of the 2nd thanks as Camden Matthews scores on a passed ball and Trace Spann's RBI groundout get them back in the game.
The Bulldogs respond in the bottom of the 2nd with a 4-run inning as Dre Amaral's 2-RBI double gives them a 4-2 lead. Kyland Duncan (RBI groundout) and Issac Castro (RBI double) help them add to their lead, giving them a 6-2 advantage. They'd continue with their scoring run in the bottom of the 3rd inning as AJ Anderson's RBI groundout and Kenny Glover's run scoring play on a passed ball expand the lead to 8-2.
NIck Copen and Brandon Leroy's efforts (sacrifice fly and RBI single respectively) gets Miles College back in the game in the top of the 5th as the deficit is reduced to 8-4.
Miles College would make a late run in the top of the 9th as they score twice as Casey Threats scores on a fielder's choice and Zakry Lacostro's sacrifice fly. However, Killan McLaughlin closes the door and preserves the win for Alabama A&M.
Dre Amaral (2 for 5 with 3 RBI's), Kylan Duncan (2 RBI's), Birmingham (AL) native Kenny Glover (2 for 3) and Trey Rutledge (1 for 2 with 2 runs scored and 2 stolen bases) pace the Bulldogs' offense. Zakry Lacostro, Nick Copen, Brandon Leroy, and Trace Spann have 1 RBI each to lead the offense for Miles College.
The Bulldogs look to build momentum as their next game is at home (April 11th) against Bethune-Cookman, while Miles College looks to bounce back against Albany State in a 3-game series at historic Rickwood Field.
